2018 Streaming Behavior Insights From 10 Different Countries

Penthera recently released the results from our 2018 International Streaming Behavior Survey. The survey queried 300 people, ages 18–50, in each of 10 countries about their consumption habits and attitudes towards streaming and download technology. The countries surveyed were Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy.

The results of our research yielded many strong insights about streaming audiences in Europe and Latin America. We learned, for example, that 88% of respondents reported that they experience some level of frustration while streaming video — for reasons including the video taking too long to start up, buffering, annoying advertisements, increased monthly data costs, and public WiFi issues. The overall results are powerful, and help us understand both the challenges of streaming video on a global level and how users feel about download as a solution. But we are equally excited about the various results from the individual countries surveyed. These results can teach us about the streaming habits of audiences in specific regions, so below we’ve shared some of the most interesting country-specific takeaways we identified.

INSIGHTS FROM LATAM

COLOMBIA

•57% stream TV or movies on a mobile device daily.
•93% have been frustrated when streaming video.
•63% of respondents have been frustrated specifically by a video taking too long to start.

BRASIL

•61% of respondents have been frustrated by a video taking too long to start.
•20% write a bad app review when they experience streaming frustrations.
•87% would pay a premium to be able to download TV and movies from their favorite streaming service.

ARGENTINA

•55% stream TV or movies on a mobile device daily.
•28% would be willing to pay a premium of $5 or more to be able to download TV and movies from their favorite streaming service.
•53% have been frustrated by a video buffering, making it hard to enjoy.

MEXICO

•61% stream TV or movies on a mobile device daily.
•91% have downloaded TV or movie from a streaming service.
•75% are more likely to subscribe to a streaming service if it offers a download option.

INSIGHTS FROM EUROPE

UK

•72% stream TV or movies on a mobile device at least weekly.
•61% have experienced buffering making it hard to enjoy.
•11% cancel their subscription after experiencing streaming frustration.

SPAIN

•51% stream TV or movies on a mobile device daily.
•58% have experienced buffering making it hard to enjoy.
•20% have been frustrated by mobile video increasing their monthly data costs.

GERMANY

•40% experience streaming frustrations at least half the time.
•14% will write a bad app store review after experiencing streaming frustration.
•30% download TV or movies to a mobile device daily or weekly.

FRANCE

•46% experience streaming frustration at least 50% of the time.
•49% have given up watching after experiencing frustration with streaming.
•58% would be willing to pay a premium to be able to download TV and movies from their favorite streaming service.

ITALY

•47% stream TV or movies on a mobile device daily.
•53% of respondents have been frustrated by a streaming video buffering making it hard to enjoy.
•50% are more likely to subscribe to a streaming service if it has a download option.

NETHERLANDS

•15% download TV and movie to their mobile device daily.
•44% have been frustrated by annoying ads while trying to stream.
•20% explore other video apps when after experiencing streaming frustrations.
